Raw data
This World Heritage site is best known for its painted murals. It is located 106 km by road from Aurangabad (Maharashtra). The caves were carved in two phases - 200 BCE - 200 CE and 450 CE - 642 CE. The first phase was Hinayana and the second Mahayana. Caves 6,7,8,11,12, and 14 are monasteries of the first phase. Caves 20,21,22,23, and 30 are monasteries of the second phase. Work abruptly stopped in the middle of the seventh century when the king shifted patronage to Hindu temples. The caves have important inscriptions that connect their patronage to many places in Maharashtra and as far away as the Ganges valley.
