Alluru monastery, (near) Yerupalem, Andhra Pradesh, IN

Raw data

Alluru is located in a village of the same name, four miles from Yerupalem station on the Vijayawada-Hyderabad railway line, in Nandigama subdivision of the Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, India. The large mound was a stupa 78’ in diameter. All stone facings have disappeared. An inscription on a limestone pillar can be presumed to come from a vihar. It records a donation of the second century CE of land and money for the maintenance of monks and the monastery, particularly of the Purvasailiya sect (Mahayana). One of the major sculptural finds is a set of limestone Buddhas of late Amaravati style (third-fourth century CE). Anther significant find is a Graeco-roman fish-lamp of the second century CE. Such a lamp is described in an Alluru inscription.
