Bhabhru monastery, (near) Shahpura, Rajasthan, IN

Raw data

"Rajasthan has not been considered a very strong centre of Buddhism due to the relative paucity of archaeological finds. Nevertheless, a fresh insight into the existing evidence throws light upon the spread of Buddhism in the region in various evolutionary stages. On one hand, the highly developed monastery and Stupa from Bhabru and an elaborate monastic complex including an imposing rock-cut shrine display the existence of Buddhism as a strong force. On the other hand, the scattered sculptural minor or partially recovered artifacts point to a subdued yet persistent presence of Buddhism." Chaturvedi (2012:36)

"The Bhabru edict was found at Bairath near Jaipur in Rajasthan. In this edict seven precepts of Buddhism have been given which Asoka liked most and he desired that the people should read them and make their conduct accordingly. This edict is preserved in Kolkata Museum."
