Garbhagiri monastery, (near) Tisgaon, Maharashtra, IN

Raw data

This site was discovered by Shreekant S. Jhadav in the 2009-2010 season. It is located N19 degrees 07 min. 756 feet x E 75 degrees 05min 175 feet, that is, about 6 kms from Shirapur village, 10 kms from Tisgaon and 25 kms from Pathardi in Ahmadnagar district. The site has an unfinished chaitya hall with octagonal columns, a few ceiling ribs and an unfinished stupa at the inner end. These stylistic features suggest a date of first or second century CE. About 100 meters to the west of the chaitya hall is a three-level residence for monks, nearly finished before it was abandoned.
