Raw data
Gummadidurru is a major Buddhist site in District Krishna, Andhra Pradesh (lat. 16 degrees 52 minutes x long. 80 degrees 18 minutes N.). Much of the site has been removed by local people for building materials. Fortunately, the lower portions of the main stupa were below the current day ground level and have yielded many sculpted stone slabs (most now in the Amaravati Museum) showing scenes from the life of the Buddha and Jatakas. The site shows evidence of long occupation, at least from the second century CE to the seventh century CE. The evidence for monastic presence is an inscription granting the sect named Puvascliyas [= Purvasailiya, tmc] aland and money for their maintenance. It is presumed that they were the main monastic establishment on the site. No building that can be identified as a monastery has, however, been located [Note: traces of a long, rectangular building with several rooms can be seen in the satellite photographs some 30 m west of the stupa - tmc, 20 May 2015]. Debala Mitra, Buddhist Monuments (Calcutta: M.Dutt Shishu Sahitya Samsad, 1971) 221-222.
