Kangra Valley monastic cluster, (towards) Pathiyar, Himachal Pradesh, IN

Raw data

Xuanzang (635 AD) does not mention monasteries specifically in Kangra, only on the plains of Jallandhara. Yet there is archaeological evidence for a number of monasteries in the upper Kangra Valley. For example, at Pathiyar "a village situated on Palampur-Malan-Dadh-Dharmsala" road about 2.5 km. from Malan, there is evidence of a vast Buddhist vihara complex." The author speculates that these monasteries were already in decline or abandoned by the time of Xuanzang. See O.C. Handa, Buddhist Art and Antiquities of Himachal Pradesh up to 8th Century A.D. (New Delhi, Indus Publishing Company, 1994) p.p. 140-42.
