The donative inscriptions in the 26 caves show a variety of donors - lay women , nuns, merchants, traders, families. The caves were often cut for the merit to accrue to a named person, as well as all sentient beings. The inscriptions are translated in Mrs. Seema Bhosle, "Buddhist Architecture: Kuda Caves" in Buddhism Past and Present (eds. Dr. Jalindar Bhosle, Dr. Monika Vaidya and Dr. Amol Vidyasagar) (Pune: Department of History, A. Garware College, 2011) 184-197.
