The site consists of 31 caves, located near Mahad, which is 205 km south of Bombay on the Bombay-Goa Highway. The caves belong to the first century BCE. Later Mahayana monks occupied the site (6th - 9th centuries). Useful inscriptions include the donation of a farm for the maintenance of the monks.
