"The Southern Shaolin Monastery has rested at the foot of Mount Jiulian in the Xitianwei Town Licheng District of Putian for more than 1400 years, surrounded by many mountain ranges. The Monastery is the birthplace of “Southern Hand” which is one of the two major branches of the world-renowned Shaolin Kung fu. The monastery is a precious site of Chan cultural heritage and a holy sanctuary for Shaolin martial arts.
The predecessor of Southern Shaolin Monastery in Putian is “Lin Quan Yuan Monastery”, originally built around A.D.557 during the South Dynasty. ]…]
The Grand Master of Songshan Shaolin Monastery instructed them to build a monastery resembling Songshan Shaolin Monastery in the south to spread the Chan Buddhist philosophy native to Songshan Shaolin Monastery. Approved by the Tang Emperor Li Shimin, the Southern Shaolin Monastery was thus built in Jiu Lian Mountain."
