Raw data
Tiles dating to the mid-seventh century have been found on the precincts of a later temple, Kokugenji, to the East of Mt. Unebi in Kashihara City (which is adjacent to, but not in, the historical Asuka area). The central foundation stone of a pagoda has also been uncovered. The rest of the layout is unknown, but judging by the position of the foundation stone, the main (golden) hall may lie under the present Kokugenji’s main hall.
The site has been tentatively identified as Ôkubodera, which was mentioned in the Nihon Shoki (720) in connection with events during the last year of Emperor Tenmu’s reign (686). It may be the family temple of the Okubo clan, possibly founded by a Korean immigrant.
