Shargol Monastery is situated about 10 km from Mulbekh in Kargil District of Jammu and Kashmir. This old Ge-Lugs Pa Buddhist monastery has interesting frescoes. There is a temple with an image of an eleven handed Avalokiteshwar in the monastery. The wooden carved images of Tara, done by the Tibetan artists are impressive. There is a tiny Buddhist nunnery below. This monastery which juts out of a brown, granite cliff, appears as if it is suspended in the middle of the mountain.

Shergol: Another picturesque village of the Wakha River Valley, Shergol is situated across the river, right of the Kargil-Leh road. The main attraction is a cave monastery, which is visible from a far as a white speck against the vertically rising ochre hill from which its appers to hang out. Shergol is a convenient base for an exciting 4-day trek across the mountain range into the Suru Valley. It is also the approach base for visiting Urgyan-Dzong, a meditation retreat lying deep inside the mountains surrounding the Wakha River.

The Cave Monastery of Shergole is old and small but has elegant frescoes. A peculiar Buddhist monastery of the region, it juts out of a brown, granite cliff and is frighteningly suspended in the middle of the mountain. The architectural oddity of the monastery along with its thrilling views arouses the curiosity of not only the tourists but also the locals and it is a perfect thing that one would want to take a photograph of, as a memento to keep forever.
