Thaton monastic cluster, (in) Thaton, Mon, MM

Raw data

"Thaton - town, southern Myanmar (Burma), situated on the Tenasserim plains in the northern part of the narrow coastal strip known as Tenasserim. Once a lively seaport, Thaton, because of silting, is now 10 miles (16 km) from the Gulf of Martaban, an inlet of the Andaman Sea. The town was an early Talaing (Mon) capital and was subject to Indian influence from the time of Aśoka. With the growth of Pegu, 70 miles (110 km) northwest across the gulf, Thaton declined politically, but it remained a centre of Indian culture until the 11th century, when it fell to the Burmans under Anawrahta."

"Anawratha […] came to the throne in Pagan. Learning of the pure Theravada from a monk arrived from Thaton, he made an object of his conquest of southern Burma in 1057 to bring back to his capital all the Buddhist relics, copies of the Tripataka, and able monks of the order." (Enc. Britannica 1966a:358)

"As early as the time of King Ashoka of India, monks were sent to Thaton to spread the Buddha's teachings. Thaton was a trading centre of southern Burma. However, from the first century C.E. onwards, trade between India and Burma expanded and there was increased contact with the Indian traders and their religious beliefs. Buddhism was widely accepted by the people in Thaton as more Buddhist missionaries arrived from Indian Buddhist centres. Thaton soon became an important centre for Theravada Buddhism.
In later centuries, Vajrayana Buddhism was introduced to the people in northern Burma."
